Muslim Hijabi Girl Forbidden From Travelling in the Delhi Metro Because of ‘Security Reasons’

Humera Khan was left shell-shocked when Delhi Metro Rail corporation (DMRC) authorities did not allow her to board the Delhi Metro, citing ‘security reasons’. In a Facebook post, Khan alleges that she has been using the public transport system for over two years and has never faced such bigotry before. She writes, “The security personnel asked me to remove the hijab, I could not help smiling and followed her instruction gladly. She waved the beeping machine on my entire head then when I started to drape it again she said that it is not allowed.“Iske sath aap board nahi kar sakte madam” (You cannot board with this).” Khan says that she has filed a complaint, but is yet to hear back from the authorities.

Brutal Rape & Murder of Champa Chhetri

Champa Chhetri, a 20-year-old girl from the Margherita town in the Tinsukia district of Assam, went missing on the 28th of April. Concerned, her parents raised an alarm, but it wasn’t till 3rd May that local boys spotted an object floating in the Dihing River near Lama Gaon and informed the police. After it turned out to be Champa’s burnt and decomposing body, a police investigation was launched, where it was revealed that she had been raped multiple times before being burnt unsuccessfully. An arrest has been made of Biswajit Chettri and Moinul Ali of Ledo region.

Ex-Indian Football Team Captain Alleges Sexual Exploitation in New Book

Sona Chaudhary, former captain of the Indian football team, has revealed in her new book ‘Game in Game’ that the players in the football team were frequently sexually exploited by the coach, secretary and the team management. She says that while on foreign tours, the coach and secretary would often ask for their beds to placed in the players’ rooms despite objections raised by the players. A report says that Sona has also alleged that players at the state level would be mentally tortured to force sexual favours out of them. Further, Sona reveals in her book that to avoid getting harassed and abused, players were forced to pretend to be lesbians.

Pune Woman Followed and Beaten Up for Wearing ‘Skimpy’ Clothes

On May 1st, a Pune-based woman was chased by two men and dragged out of her, before being thrashed for ‘keeping male company’ and wearing ‘skimpy’ clothes. The woman says that after yelling obscenities at her from their car, the men followed her home and intercepted her car. The victim believes they would have gone on to rape her if her friends had not intervened in a timely manner. The men left, only to return with 10-15 men, carrying rods and lathis. The victim says that she thought they were in an inebriated state, and that she couldn’t do much as they came from moneyed families. When she approached police, they filed a non-cognisable complaint, due to which she had to visit Kondhwa police station several times before an FIR was finally filed.

First Ever Dalit Girl To Top UPSC

Lady Shri Ram college alum Tina Dabi, a Dalit girl made news when she grabbed the coveted first rank in the prestigious Civil Service exams conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in her very first attempt. The prodigious young woman has a degree in Political Science, and says that she wants to work on the abysmal state of gender equality in Haryana. A self-proclaimed feminist, Tina credits her parents and her alma mater for shaping her into the person she is. The seventh rank was bagged by Chennai girl A Sharanya after four attempts. An engineer from SRM University, Sharanya’s hard work and perseverance finally paid off when she emerged as the Tamil Nadu topper. To top it off, Ulhasnagar resident, 26-year-old Pranjal Patil, a visually-impaired woman, cleared the exams in her first attempt, and got an All-India ranking of 773.

Dalit Woman, Raped by UP Politician, Succumbs to Injuries

A twenty-year-old Dalit woman who alleged in 2014 that she was kidnapped and raped by Gurdeep, the son of BSP leader Mahendra Katiyar, finally succumbed to her grievous injuries on the 10th May, 2016. Arrested three times for a false larceny case lodged by Gurdeep, justice evaded the unfortunate young woman until the very end. Subjected to brutal treatment at the jail, the woman was moved to a hospital. “She had an injury on the right side of the head and the front that led to clotting in the brain and swelling,” said neurosurgeon Gajendra Singh, who treated her.

Ansar Ahamad Shaikh, the 21 year old who grabbed the 361st rank in the UPSC exams reveals how he had no choice but to change his name to Shubham, in order to get food and accommodation in Pune, while he was preparing for his exams. The Fergusson college graduate and the son of a rickshaw puller, Shaikh said that a lot of hostels and paying guest accommodations only admitted Hindu students, thus forcing him to adopt the name of his friend.

Differently-abled Jeeja Ghosh to be Compensated by Airline for Being Forcibly Removed from Airplane in 2012

The Supreme Court of India has ordered commercial airlines Spicejet to pay Rs 10 lakh in damages to Jeeja Ghosh, a patient of cerebral palsy, for having her forcibly de-boarded from one of its flights in 2012. Ghosh is a Kolkata-based disability rights activist, and sees this compensation not as a personal victory, but as an achievement for the specially-abled community.

Sharmila Nair, a Kerala-based fashion designer recently not only dedicated her newest saree collection, Mazhavil (rainbow in Malayalam), to the transgender community, but also had two trans women, Maya Menon and Gowri Savithri, model the line. “When Kerala announced its transgender policy, I thought that if our government can, we need to start thinking about inclusivity too. Why shouldn’t we?” she added.
