The B In LGBTQIA+: 11 Common Myths On Bisexuality Debunked

On Celebrate Bisexuality Day, we delve into the myths about bisexual people and bisexuality to raise more awareness and understanding.

In the third series of #MondayMythBusting, we delve into the large spectrum of LGBTQIA+ terms and focus on the big B.

The B in LGBTQIA+ stands for Bisexual. The word ‘bisexual’ simply refers to people who are not monosexual: they are not attracted exclusively to members of the opposite sex, and they are not attracted exclusively to members of their same sex.

Bisexual people often face discrimination from within the queer community and encounter unique myths and stereotypes that other members of the lesbian, gay, and trans* communities do not face.

Celebrate Bisexuality Day is observed on September 23 by members of the bisexual community and their supporters. This day is a call for the bisexual community, their friends and supporters to recognize and celebrate bisexuality, bisexual history, bisexual community and culture, and all the bisexual people in their lives.

First observed in 1999, this day is the brainchild of three United States bisexual rights activists: Wendy Curry of Maine, Michael Page of Florida, and Gigi Raven Wilbur of Texas. Wilbur said,

Ever since the Stonewall rebellion, the gay and lesbian community has grown in strength and visibility. The bisexual community also has grown in strength but in many ways we are still invisible. I too have been conditioned by society to automatically label a couple walking hand in hand as either straight or gay, depending upon the perceived gender of each person.

Today, on Celebrate Bisexuality Day, we delve into the truth behind harmful and inaccurate assumptions about bisexual people in order to raise more awareness and understanding.

Without further ado, we present you the third series of #MondayMythBusting – myths on bisexuals and bisexuality. Let us know in the comments section what we have missed out and what would you like us to cover in the fourth series.
