There is no minimum wage or regulation of salaries, frequent job migration without benefits, no arrangements for prevention of sexual harassment, and job security often rests on informal relationships with employers in small salons.

Women make up 28% of the workforce in India. However, they are largely concentrated in the informal sector engaged in vocations characterized by low earning, low productivity, poor working conditions and lack of social protection.

Godrej‘s CSR project Salon-I is a program training women and girls in the area of Beauty and Wellness. They work in partnership with NGOs across 23 states and have reached close to 90000 women till date. What gets missed out in the stories of skill building and empowerment are the struggles of these women working in an informal sector – a workplace environment without wage regulations, job security or protection against harassment and discrimination.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”What are we doing?

These stories will highlight exploitation at work, the high dropout rate, sexual harassment and gender discrimination. The campaign will use multi-media storytelling in the form of articles, comics, videos and infographics to portray the stories of women who work at salons.
