Why have we forgotten the women?

There were 15 women members of the constituent assembly who played a very important role in shaping this important text. Individually, these women had diverse trajectories; they came from different levels of conservative families, traditional families. 

But they all knew the plight of Indian women. The violence and the discrimination.

The Constitution of India was adopted by the elected Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949 and came into effect on 26 January 1950. The total membership of the Constituent Assembly was 389.

These 15 women, who helped shaped the Constitution, raised several prominent issues in the Constituent Assembly debates. They addressed a wide range of issues of social justice such as prevention of bonded labour and human trafficking, minority rights, women’s rights, etc. Despite the large corpus of literature on the Constitution, little is know about the women who played a key role in the making of the Constitution.
