    About Nazdeek

    Founded in 2012, Nazdeek is a legal capacity-building organisation committed to bringing access to justice closer to marginalised communities in South Asia. Nazdeek, through its partners, works to advance social and economic rights through civic training, community engagement, and access to judicial and non-judicial remedies, with a core focus on women from marginalised communities. We believe that the law can be an effective tool in overcoming discrimination and marginalization.

    Two of our main projects have been:

    1. Improving access to labour and health rights of tea plantation workers in Assam;
    2. 2. Strengthening housing and health rights of slum dwellers in Delhi.

    We are now bringing our “legal empowerment advocacy model” to the states of Tamil Nadu and West Bengal with primary focus on labour and constitutional rights. Nazdeek has facilitated a South Asia level network of stakeholders for advocating the rights of formal sector workers. We are committed to strengthening this network over the next three years.

    Position Overview

    Nazdeek envisions a world where communities are legally empowered and have access to tools and mechanisms to demand and secure their socio-economic rights. The Consultant will play a critical leadership role in realising this vision. Guided by Nazdeek’s core values and strategic goals, the Consultant will work closely with our Assam team and local partners to strengthen our work on socio-economic rights and labour laws among tea plantation workers. The position offers an opportunity to engage in participatory research, community engagement, and analytical writing while gaining advocacy experience in the growing field of legal empowerment and corporate accountability.     Major Duties and Responsibilities of the Consultant:

    • Develop high quality analytical written material for research, training and outreach, advocacy, and basic communication.
    • Undertake legal and policy research on labour, maternal health, and other socio-economic rights issues in Assam with focus on tea plantation workers.
    • Conduct extensive primary research, interacting with a variety of high-level stakeholders, and collating data through quantitative and qualitative methods.
    • Develop innovative methodologies using participatory tools for research and training.
    • Support partners in developing and implementing training curriculums.
    • Ensure project deliverables are completed according to timelines; monitor and report on project indicators for the purpose.
    • Collaborate with team members in developing, implementing, and updating organisational strategic plans.

    Required qualifications and skills:

    Education: Applicants must either possess an LL.M. (preferred) or LL.B. degree, with experience in human rights, or labour laws; or a Masters degree in social sciences with preferably a specialisation in human rights, gender studies, labour welfare, or other related disciplines with a human rights focus.


    • Excellent English writing skills. Proficiency in any Adivasi language and/or Hindi and Assamese will be preferred.
    • At least 3 years of experience in program administration and implementing projects around women’s and workers’ rights, preferably on labour law and/or maternal health rights in Assam. OR for candidates with a legal background at least 3 years of post-qualification experience in working on women’s and workers’ rights, preferably on labour law and/or maternal health rights in Assam.
    • Thorough knowledge of human rights, labour welfare and gender issues. Knowledge and experience in business and human rights in relation to the tea plantation industry or equivalent, will be preferable.
    • Ability to conduct legal research, analysis, and writing, and use an intersectional lens.
    • Field experience working with marginalised communities in advancing rights, including fact-finding and documentation.
    • Communicate effectively with a diverse stakeholder, from workers in vulnerable communities to government officials and international organisations.
    • Familiarity with community engagement and outreach as well as experience with grassroots organisations and collectives will be preferable.
    • Experience in planning and implementing community led rights-based advocacy.

    Salary: ​Commensurate with experience and in-line with the average non-profit sector in India. Nazdeek is a small organisation; however, we strive to provide our team members with the support and flexibility they need.
