< 1

Today, November 22, marks the 187th birth anniversary of Jhalkari Bai, the legendary Dalit warrior who fought in Rani Lakshmibai’s army in the 1857 War of Independence. Jhalkari Bai disguised herself as the Rani of Jhansi, risking her life so that the Queen could safely escape. Her story ought to be immortalized in our textbooks, but finds no mention in mainstream history narratives due to the Brahmanization of history that sidelines Dalit and women’s histories. Today, we salute this icon for her bravery and courage, and pay homage to the Dalit Virangana Jhalkari Bai.
