BAPSA: The New Alternative Socio-Political Phenomenon
The JNUSU elections are prominent because they are happening precisely at a time when counter resistance movements are gaining strength and gravity across the country, especially across university campuses.
In the JNU Student Union Election Debate held on 8 September 2016, Rahul Sonpimple, president candidate for BAPSA called for the unity of the oppressed in his politically stimulating, well defined, and accurate speech. He also strongly critiqued the ABVP as well as the AISA-SFI alliance.
All other candidates Janhawi Ojha ABVP, Mohit Pandey from AISA-SFI alliance, Sunny Dhiman from NSUI, and Dileep Kumar from Student’s Front for Swaraj, also presented their speeches.
After Rahul’s speech, ASA-TISS and SIO JNU both extended support to BAPSA for JNUSU Elections, marking the unity of the oppressed.

Demand for Free Crèche Facility
The Supreme Court faced criticism for charging exorbitant fee for its crèche service making it virtually unaffordable for many of its staff, following which it has decided to reduce the fee for the said service. Earlier, parents had to pay Rs 5,000 per month for one child in addition to depositing Rs 5000 as security money at the time of admission in the creche. But the court has now decided to remove the security amount and reduce the monthly charges to Rs 2,500.
Indira Jaising has urged the Supreme Court to make the Creche facility free. She has also raised various issues in respect of the functioning of Creche, such as the charges levied, the procedure for registering a child for a single day, better ventilation, open air area for children to play, emoluments payable to the employees/attendants, the upper age limit prescribed for children eligible for using the crèche etc.
