“Women in Tech” campaigns are usually hiring campaigns by tech companies focused at hiring more women into the companies. There’s no denying the fact that these campaigns have certainly made a huge impact, as many statistics would tell you, but it has also slowly turned into marketing gimmick for a lot of organizations to present themselves in good light.
Women are at the forefront of digital rights and security and are not just using digital security, but also creating feminist digital security guides. Below, I curate some of them.
Sexism, racism, homophobia and misogyny masquerading as “free speech” has only done irreparable harm by reinforcing toxic, discriminatory majoritarianism, leaving behind several unfortunate marginalisations in its wake. If the free speech that incites minority-ism is left unchecked even on the internet, there will truly be no avenues left for the more vulnerable groups to exist and articulate freely.
It is imperative for not just the government, but every individual who yields power in science to seek examples, to make the research labs and classrooms accessible and to foster a safe space in these male-dominated areas to make them more inclusive. Only then would STEM be able to unleash its full potential.
